Plugging Away

I'm still plugging away at things. I'm hitting my workouts at least 3 times a week and running 3 days a week although it's been only 9 days. Yesterday I ran before my workout and was trying to go slow but ended up doing my quickest run yet. Go figure.
Today was "Family Day" in our province so I spent it with my brothers playing in a poker tournament. I ended up winning it after having to rebuy twice after busting out twice in the first 4 hands! Lucky for me it was a rebuy tourney. I hadn't won a tournament since September so it felt good. After this I stopped on the way home and worked out again. Wish I hadn't as it was tough after trashing my legs yesterday.

I'M BACK BUT I'VE MOVED

Boy it's been awhile...5 months to be exact. I've posted my reasons but at my new home. I've been thinking about my return and decided that when I did I wanted a fresh start. So if you're interested you'll find me here at Triing It Again. Maybe I'll see you there.

HAVEN'T FORGOT and GOALS

I may have taken a lot of time off exercising but I didn't forget what I was taught. Whether it was by my trainers around here or my friends online. Today I remembered one from my friends online. Which one? The one where I'm supposed to listen to my body. Yeah I usually have a hard time with this one but not today.

I was walking to the local park to do some hill repeats and try another run today when I felt my arch start to tighten a bit just before I got there. So wanting to get enough hard exercise in without doing too much damage I decided to do the hill repeats first. Last Thursday I barely got 2 in after my run. Today I did 5... walking the first 4 and running the last one. Tuesday I'll try it again but try and run the last 2 instead. Hopefully in another week or so I'll be able to run up 5 times str8 and then work on increasing to 6,7,etc.

After the repeats my arch was not hurting but I could still feel it was worse than when I was walking there. So I decided to take a long route to the track and give the run a try. I think I maybe went 100m and decided to shut it down. Getting my 2nd run in just wasn't worth risking really injuring my arch and being out of commision for awhile. I'm hoping my arch is just not used to the walking/running,etc and it will be 100% soon. On my walk home it was not bothering me as much and walking around the house now it's not noticeable at all. So Tuesday I'll try the run again and see what happens.

GOALS..the BIG ones

No I haven't forgot. I did say I was going to announce my goals in my next post so here they are:

1. do the Graham Beasely Half-Ironman next July(this is where I did the OLY)
2. train for the Ottawa Marathon...depending on how the training goes actually do it
or drop down and do the HM again.

3. I'm toying with the idea of running in 1 or 2 smaller races but can't decide
whether I can be ready to run them...if I can run the first I can run the second
they are:
Dec.6 10am> Santa Shuffle 5k Fun Run...fundraiser for Salvation Army
Dec.31 6:30pm> Resolution Run...5 or 10k

What do you think?

1ST MILE

Today I went out for my walk and on this walk was debating how far, whether to do hills and where to go. A few minutes in I decided to walk to the community recreation facilities where there's a 1/4 mile track. I decided I'd try running my 1st mile in about a year. I knew it was a bit risky being that I'm 20lbs heavier than when I started running last year. Risky because then I had to beware of my left knee as it's the weaker one.

The run went pretty well and after wards only have a slight right arch pain when walking. I did have one slight knee pain when stopped on my walk home for directions. I believe it was just the way I took off walking and not a result of the run. I'll know better tomorrow about both pains. Hopefully everything is good to go for another run on the weekend. If it is I'm going to buy a new pair of shoes as these were last years and I got a lot of miles on them.

If I don't forget I'll write about my new goal. Yes getting in shape is reason enough to keep exercising but I'm a competitive guy and I need a secondary goal as well :-)

FINALLY WON

This summer I've been playing every Tuesday night in an Men's Industrial Golf League. Well last week we finally won our night! And heading into this week we were only one point from getting out of the basement. This week we followed up with another good night shooting 2 under so hopefully we at least got out of last place if not get a prize for finishing 1st or 2nd.

MY personal golf has finally come around as I played 3 rounds last week and shot 95,99,91. 2 of these courses were pretty hilly and a good walk carrying the old sticks around. I was thinking of golfing today but the poker didn't go so well last night so I'm going to just have to go for a walk instead.

My weight has been slowly coming down. My Life Coach has me tracking my food again but in more detail then I was last year. I'm using SparkPeople to do this and it's pretty good. It's easier than I thought to enter what you're eating and therefore easy to see where you're going wrong once you have your meal entered. You can also track your workouts on there just as easily. The only thing I don't like is they don't give me even half the calories burned for my golf as another website does :-(

Scrappers and I made it through our first week without killing each other :-) When I first got her she seemed pretty quiet but I guess now that she's warmed up to me and her new digs she's comfortable enough to "speak" ...a lot. She's the first cat I know of to play fetch. Well not on demand just when she wants. She'll even bring one of her balls into my bed in the middle of the night. One night I'm sleeping peacefully and she's making a ruckus. The next morning I find one of her balls in bed with me. She keeps it up I'll have to put the balls away before going to bed if I want to sleep through the night.

GOLF MYSELF FIT?

For 3 weeks now I've been working with a life coach trying to change a few things in my life. I think having someone to answer to helped get me going again with my weight loss goal. This weeks assignment she had for me involved figuring out how many calories I'm burning when I exercise.

I never knew I burned so many calories when I golfed! Of course I'm talking when I carry my bags and not the very odd time I ride a cart. At FreeDieting.com I learned that I burn 420 calories every 30 minutes when I carry my bag. So last night I burned a nice 3360 calories as we played 18 in 4hours. Makes me want to reconsider getting a membership for next year as I could just golf my way fit :-)

Last night was the first round all year where I felt like my "A" game was almost fully there. It took a while to get going but when it did I managed to shoot my best round this year...95. Tonight I play in my weekly men's league so I'll soon see if last night was a fluke or if I can actually put together 2 rounds in a row.

And to close it out I have a new "girl" in my life. Her name is "Scrappers" and she's a black and white 7 months old kitten. I picked her up yesterday sight unseen as for $20 I got her and all her stuff so it saved me having to go out and buy it. So far it seems as though I got lucky. She's a very good looking cat and pretty tame. She actually tolerated 5 hrs in my work truck yesterday. I'll post a pic when I get my camera working again.

DAMN SCALES

I just love scales. NOT! I thought I was cruising along in my weight loss as the scale said I was down 11lbs on Wednesday morning after 9 days. Pretty good start considering I've only been walking and watching what I eat. Then Friday and yesterday my scale said I'd put 6 lbs of it back on...how?!! Now this morning it says I've knocked 3lbs of the 6 back off even though I overate due to my frustration with the scale. Go figure!

Don't worry I just overate too much fruit. I had plenty of thoughts of totally sabotaging myself by ordering a pizza or going out for some sort of fast food but I didn't. I think what helped that was my slavery to my online poker playing. Hope the $50 I blew was worth keeping myself mostly on track...lol.

Back to the scale....they suck! Doesn't matter how good the one you bought is it doesn't take long then they give you a multitude of different readings. I blew $50 on a Weight Watchers scale and I'm figuring now I wasted the money as it can give me 3 different readings in 3 seconds.

So I'm figuring to keep my mind sane I'll use my scale as a guide to how I'm doing and for a true weight I'll stop into my doctor's office once in awhile. I just checked again for fun and I only lost 1.3lbs of the 3 above. Damn scales!

So I'm down 6lbs in 2 weeks....still a good pace and result.Guess I better go now and get my walk in that I put off for the last 2 days! I'm going to make up for it a bit by doing 4 miles. An out and back with some very good hills.

Have a good day!
